The term ‘insulation’ applies to several types of insulation, including thermal (condensation control and heat conservation), acoustic, fire and impact insulation. Most of the insulation in buildings is for thermal purposes, although the material chosen should perform most of the other functions at the same time.

To find out whether you would benefit from adding insulation to your home or business, we recommend that you first establish how much and where you currently have insulation in your building.

Mechanical Insulation Services

Mechanical insulation refers to thermal insulation used on piping, equipment, and all types of mechanical systems, including boilers, HVAC systems and ducts, as well as emergency generator exhaust systems and kitchen hood exhaust ductwork. This type of insulation serves to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and is commonly installed in industrial and commercial facilities.

Insulation is required for mechanical systems that carry or store liquid, gas, air, or any product in which the ambient air impacts the temperature of the substance being transferred or stored, as found in industrial facilities and some commercial buildings. These systems must be insulated to maintain process temperatures for both cold and hot systems, to protect liquids from freezing, to provide burn protection for employees from possible exposure to hot systems, and for soundproofing.

Comfort Insulation

The greatest amount of energy loss in a home is through the roof, which is why insulating the roof spaces and walls of a house helps to make your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This type of insulation is known as comfort insulation as it’s more about keeping your indoor environment comfortable, whatever the climate, and does not need maintenance. The use of comfort insulation is increasing in Bermuda, especially with new builds, although it is also possible to retrofit some buildings.

To find out which method and installation system would fit your home the best, call BIL and arrange an appointment for a technician to come and evaluate your roof space – you’ll not only improve the comfort level inside your home, but you’ll save on energy costs as well – which will reflect an excellent return on your investment!

BIL use high quality insulation products for sound reduction purposes, with a variety of options available to suit your specific requirements. The approach to reducing sound is to use insulation materials to reflect or absorb the energy of the sound waves. Sound reduction products are available for both commercial and residential applications, which can be either retrofitted or installed in new-builds.

To find out which sound reduction method and installation system would fit your home or business the best, call BIL and arrange an appointment for a technician to come and evaluate your needs.

A firestop is a fire protection system used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance rated wall and/or floor assemblies and are designed to impede the spread of fire by filling the openings with fire-resistant materials. If the openings in fire separations are unprotected, the spread of fire will usually be beyond the limits of the fire safety plan of a building.

Fireproofing is a passive fire protection measure where a structure or material is rendered resistant to fire or incombustible. Applying a certification-listed fireproofing system to a structure will ensure a fire-resistance rating.
